CSET Certification
CSET certification can be obtained by passing the appropriate California Subject Examinations for Teachers (CSET) test(s). Teachers can earn a Single Subject teaching credential, which permits them to teach particular subjects at the K-12 level. The Multiple Subject teaching credential allows teachers to teach any K-12 subject within the classroom. An Education Specialist Instruction credential is required for K-12 teachers in order to teach students with disabilities that have been specifically noted and documented.
CSET certification in bilingual authorization can be earned by candidates who pass the CSET-Languages Other Than English (LOTE) together with other appropriate examinations. The Bilingual, Crosscultural, Language, and Academic Development Examinations, previously used to fulfill other requirements, have been replaced by the CSET-LOTE subtests in specific areas.
The basic skills requirement established by the state of California can be fulfilled by successfully passing the CSET-Multiple Subjects and CSET-Writing Skills tests and subtests. Passing scores on the CSET-Multiple Subjects and CSET-Single Subjects exams also fulfill the No Child Left Behind content requirement. Teachers interested in CSET certification in order to satisfy the educational technology requirement for either Multiple or Single Subject credentials or for Education Specialist Instruction credentials must pass CSET-Preliminary Educational Technology.
