The California Subject Examinations for Teachers (CSET) are the result of collaborative efforts. The California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, Pearson's Evaluation Systems, and California educators and classroom teachers have worked together to create test questions and modify them as needed. These questions are tailored to offer equitable testing parameters to all examinees. The tests are designed to assess the degree to which teachers' abilities and knowledge align with content standards and curriculum frameworks for California public school grades K-12. In order to receive certification, teachers must demonstrate basic competence in teaching skills as well as an understanding of content areas.
CSET offers tests in five categories. The category of Multiple Subjects includes three tests. Each of these is composed of both multiple-choice and constructed-response questions. The next category, Preliminary Educational Technology, contains two tests. They too are a combination of multiple-choice and constructed-response questions. The third category, Writing Skills, consists of one test which must be taken with Multiple Subjects to complete the Basic Skills requirement. The Writing Skills test is made up of two constructed-response questions. The fourth category, CSET Single Subjects, contains the bulk of the Languages Other Than English (LOTE) test material. Each of the single subjects is composed of two, three, or four subtests that contain a mix of multiple-choice and constructed-response questions. The final category, LOTE, is designed for bilingual authorization and includes a bilingual education methodology assessment test as well as tests concerned with bilingual cultural awareness and language and communication skills. These language and communication skills tests can also apply toward a teaching credential in Single Subjects. In this final category, some tests combine multiple-choice and constructed-response questions, and others focus solely on multiple-choice or constructed-response questions.
In order to help examinees familiarize themselves with the types of multiple-choice questions they will be tested on, we have put together a set of free test questions. The CSET is comprehensive and detailed; however, with sufficient preparation, the chances of passing on the first try are much higher.
